Namibia lies on Africa's South-West coast and has a population of only 2.2 million spread over more than 800,000 sq km.
Germany took control of what it called South West Africa in the late 1800s. The discovery of diamonds in 1908 prompted a new influx of Europeans but South Africa seized Namibia during the First World War and administered it under a League of Nations mandate. Since then the country has enjoyed stability having gained independence in 1990 after a long struggle against rule by South Africa.
Hifikepunye Pohamba, a founding member of the rebel movement which fought for independence, was elected president in 2004 and again in 2009. The country's main exports are diamonds, copper, gold, zinc, lead, uranium and livestock.
